The current sporting director of Sevilla was at Roma at the time and he was offered the chance to sign the Norweigan phenom.

Erling Haaland has emerged as one of the most exciting young players in Europe this season. It matters little what competition or team, the Norweigan scores goals.

From RB Leipzig to Borussia Dortmund and from the league to the Champions League, he can’t stop. The 19-year-old moved to the Bundesliga for €20 million despite interest from several clubs.

Hoffenheim could have signed him at 15 but didn’t want to pay his €5,000 wages — their maximum is a €2,000 and weren’t willing to change policy. Years later, Barcelona had the chance to sign him but they preferred Kevin Prince Boateng from Sassuolo in a deal that didn’t work out. Marseille declined that chance to sign him because of his wage demands too.

According to A Bola, Roma had the chance to sign him too but decided not to. It was Sebino Nela, the former Roma player, who revealed what was a spurned opportunity by the usually eagle-eyed Monchi.

“Two years ago, they offered Roma the chance to sign Haaland for €4 million,” he explained. “They rejected the offer and he ended up going to Salzburg.”
