Download Gerber Group Sets Up Food Pantry For Laid-Off Restaurant Employees
Gerber Group has set up a weekly food pantry in New York City in response to having to close all of its bars and restaurants in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
The restaurant group, which includes hotspots Mr. Purple, Irvington and The Sunken Lounge at the new TWA Hotel, created the initiative after having to lay off more than 400 employees.
The pantry is available for all Gerber Group employees, the company announced Tuesday, at no cost so they can provide for their families. Groceries can be picked up or delivered.
“I’ve always treated my company as a family,” CEO Scott Gerber said in a video, “and I will forever.”
The pantry is being run out of Union Square’s Irvington.
Gerber is hoping to re-hire all of his laid-off employees when restrictions are lifted. All bars and restaurants in NYC have been ordered to only provide takeout and delivery.
